BMC Approves ₹52.53 Crore Rail Overbridge At Chunabhatti To Ease Traffic Woes
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has sanctioned a ₹52.53 crore Rail Overbridge (ROB) project in Chunabhatti, aimed at easing traffic congestion and improving safety for both pedestrians and motorists. The proposed bridge will replace the current railway crossing that connects Duncan Causeway in Sion to V. N. Purav Marg in Chunabhatti. This crossing often leads to significant traffic delays due to frequent closures for Harbour line train movements.
The new bridge will span a total of 290 meters-36 meters over railway land and 254 meters over municipal land. It will have a width of 11.30 meters over the railway section and 8.5 meters across the municipal portion. The structure will feature two staircases, two vehicular lanes, and a 2.5-meter-wide footpath designed to facilitate pedestrian access.

The project, expected to be completed in two and a half years, was awarded to M/s Sai Projects (Mumbai) Pvt. Ltd., which secured the contract through a tender process that concluded in late 2024.
This infrastructure upgrade is expected to significantly reduce long wait times at the existing level crossing, improve access for emergency services, and enhance safety for daily commuters. Local residents have expressed support for the project, particularly those who currently face difficulties navigating the crossing-such as elderly pedestrians and women with children-welcoming the relief the new overbridge promises to bring.
