BJP becomes 1st party to win over 100 seats in Maharashtra in 24 years

, Oct 19: The Bharatiya Janata Party (

) became the first party in 24 years to win over 100 seats in a

assembly election. The party won six seats while was leading in another 105 ones when this report was written.

The last time a party had won more than 100 seats in Maharashtra was in 1990 when the Congress had bagged 141 seats. Since then, the highest number of seats a party have managed to win in Maharashtra is 82 (Congress in 2009).

The BJP's previous best tally was 65 in the 1995 election. The Congress, on the other hand, was set to face its worst result in Maharashtra (leading in 44 seats). Its previous worst tally was 69 in 2004.
