BEST’s New Plan After Kurla Accident: Smaller Buses To Tackle Congested Roads

In response to the tragic bus accident in Kurla, the Brihanmumbai Electricity Supply and Transport (BEST) undertaking has proposed limiting the length of buses operating near congested railway stations to nine metres, according to the Hindustan Times (HT) report. The decision, announced on Wednesday, aims to improve safety and traffic flow in high-density areas.

BEST authorities revealed that stations like Borivali (W), Andheri (W), Bandra (E), Kurla (W), and Mulund (W) are not only overcrowded but also heavily impacted by the presence of unauthorised auto rickshaws, commonly referred to as the 'auto mafia.' These autos often occupy significant road space, leaving little room for large BEST buses to manoeuvre safely.

The problem is compounded by quarrels between bus drivers and auto rickshaw operators over limited space. Shared autos frequently block roads and bus stands, worsening traffic congestion and creating challenges for pedestrians and other road users.

BEST general manager Anil Diggikar highlighted the need for change, stating in the HT report, "Mini buses or medium-sized buses no longer than 9 metres should be allowed at congested spaces. Depot managers are working with local police to manage congestion, but shared autos continue to dominate the area."

The urgency for these measures was underscored by Monday's accident in Kurla (W), where a 12-metre-long e-bus collided with 22 vehicles, leading to seven fatalities and 42 injuries. CCTV footage from the incident showed narrow roads clogged with parked rickshaws, vendors, and other obstacles, which left little room for the bus to pass.

BEST officials emphasised the challenges of operating large buses in such environments, explaining that these vehicles need adequate space to navigate tight roadways, drop passengers, and turn around safely.

Auto rickshaw union leader Thampy Kurien suggested that designated lanes for shared autos, along with proper fare and destination boards, could help alleviate the problem. "Space for BEST buses must be segregated. Only then can the issue be resolved," he added in the report.

The BEST undertaking has formed a committee to study the affected areas and recommend practical solutions for integrating smaller buses with other modes of transport. This step is seen as crucial for improving safety and efficiency around Mumbai's railway stations.
