Auction Alert: Municipality To Sell 462 Properties Due To Unpaid Taxes – Act Quickly To Prevent Loss

In a strong move to tackle property tax arrears, the municipality has issued notices to 462 property owners, notifying them of imminent confiscation and auction of their properties, according to Lokmat. This action is part of an effort to address substantial unpaid taxes and enhance municipal revenue.

Property tax is a crucial source of income for the municipality. Owners are required to pay their taxes within 90 days of receiving a payment notice. If the tax is not settled within this period, the Municipal Corporation initiates a process of escalating measures.

Initially, a 'demand letter' is issued, followed by a 21-day final notice. Despite these steps, the list of defaulters has been growing over the last decade, leading to the current enforcement action.

The municipality will auction various assets, including vehicles seized due to unpaid property taxes in the K West Division. These vehicles will be available for inspection until August 23, after which they will be sold through an electronic auction process.

Notices have been sent to defaulters across different property categories, including residential, industrial, commercial, and open spaces. The assessment and collection department has urged these property owners to settle their taxes within three days.

The notices include a warning that if taxes remain unpaid, actions will be taken under the Mumbai Municipal Corporation Act of 1888. This may include property confiscation and auctioning, as well as fines.
