36 Flamingos Die After Collision With Emirates Flight In Mumbai

A tragic incident occurred near Mumbai's Ghatkopar area when at least 36 flamingos died after being struck by an Emirates flight. The flight, identified as EK 508, encountered a bird hit upon its arrival at Mumbai Airport at 9.18 pm the previous night. Despite the collision, the aircraft managed to land safely, albeit with sustained damages. The incident unfolded over the Laxmi Nagar region of Pantnagar, prompting immediate action from forest officials and environmentalists.

Following the incident, an intensive search operation was initiated to determine if additional flamingos were affected. SY Rama Rao, the Additional Chief Conservator of Forests (Mangrove Protection Cell), confirmed the discovery of 36 flamingo bodies and emphasized the ongoing efforts to locate more casualties. The proximity of the accident site to Laxmi Nagar, at the northern end of Ghatkopar East, was identified as a critical area for investigation by Deputy Conservator Deepak Khade.

Concerns about the factors leading to this unfortunate event have been raised, with environmentalists scrutinizing the impact of human infrastructure on wildlife behavior. D Stalin, from the NGO Vanshakti, pointed to newly installed power lines through the sanctuary area as a potential cause for the birds' disorientation. He criticized the permissions granted for such installations, suggesting they could have been avoided to protect the wildlife. Stalin also speculated on the possible implications of habitat disturbance in the NRI complex area and TS Chanakya lakes, known flamingo habitats, suggesting that recent activities might have driven the birds towards the flight path.
