300 Cats In One Apartment? Municipal Corporation Steps In After Complaints Of Foul Smell; Here's What Happened

In Pune, around 300 cats were discovered in a single apartment in Marvel Bounty Society, leading to swift intervention by the Municipal Corporation after neighbours raised concerns about poor hygiene, according to a Times Now report.

The issue came to light when residents complained about persistent foul smells and unsanitary conditions in the building. Upon investigation, officials found that a flat owner had been sheltering and caring for stray cats.

Why Were So Many Cats In the Apartment?

As per the same report, inspector Nilesh Jagdale explained, "The owner of an apartment in Marvel Bounty Society frequently brought in stray cats, cared for them, and released them once they recovered. However, over time, a large number of cats accumulated in the flat, creating unhygienic conditions that disturbed the neighbours."

The cats were primarily housed in a ninth-floor flat, and the resulting odour had become a serious concern for other residents.

"The owner of the flat has kept several cats inside, leading to foul smells spreading through the society. After receiving complaints, a team visited the apartment and issued a notice instructing the owner to relocate the cats," added Inspector Jagdale.

Municipal Corporation Issues Notice

Following the inspection, the Municipal Corporation issued a notice directing the flat owner to move the cats within two days. Officials confirmed that if the order was not followed, the cats would be taken into the custody of the Municipal Corporation for rescue.

"The neighbours contacted the Municipal Corporation, whose officials inspected the flats and informed the owner that the cats must be removed within two days. No case has been registered yet, but we will consult senior officials to determine further action. The cats will be taken into the Municipal Corporation's custody for rescue," Inspector Jagdale stated, the report added.

The incident has sparked discussions about responsible pet ownership and the need for improved animal care facilities in urban areas. While the flat owner's intentions seemed compassionate, neighbours emphasised that maintaining hygiene in shared spaces is essential.

The Municipal Corporation has assured residents that it will continue monitoring the situation and take legal action if required.
