West Bengal's MSME Sector Set to Enhance Defence Production Opportunities
The MSME sector in West Bengal is set to play a crucial role in boosting defence production, as highlighted by a senior state official. Rajesh Pandey, Principal Secretary of the Department of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises and Textiles, discussed the potential of the state's 90 lakh MSMEs during a recent Defence MSME Manufacturing Forum meeting.
Opportunities for MSMEs in Defence

Pandey stressed the importance of promoting West Bengal's MSMEs, noting the state's significant industrial infrastructure. "We call upon you all to make a strong pitch for Bengal," he stated, highlighting the sector's potential. The state is home to one of India's largest leather parks and is developing a Rubber Park alongside several industrial parks.
The Ministry of Defence's decision to involve MSMEs extensively in defence production marks a significant policy shift. This opens up opportunities for these enterprises to manufacture various defence products and engage in research and development. The inclusion of start-ups further expands possibilities within this sector.
Engagement with Industry Experts
Pandey encouraged direct dialogue between state officials, potential investors in defence, and industry experts. Such interactions aim to identify how government support, like incentives and infrastructure, can facilitate projects. "We need to know the project proposals and in what way they can be of use," he said.
The state is focusing on new projects and their commissioning. A high-powered committee reviews progress every 15 days to ensure timely execution. This proactive approach aims to streamline processes and address any challenges promptly.
Presence of Key Industry Players
The forum saw participation from senior officials of major companies such as GRSE, Bharat Dynamics Ltd, Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd, Aerospace Engineers Pvt Ltd, and Titagarh Wagons. Their involvement underscores the collaborative efforts needed to boost the defence sector through MSMEs.
West Bengal's emphasis on its MSME sector aligns with national goals for self-reliance in defence production. By leveraging its industrial parks and fostering innovation through start-ups, the state aims to contribute significantly to this strategic area.
