India's MSMEs: Key Players in Upcoming Free Trade Agreements for Global Trade
India's micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) are increasingly being spotlighted in the nation's forthcoming Free Trade Agreements (FTAs). The government acknowledges the vast potential these agreements hold for MSMEs to engage in international trade. Efforts are underway to incorporate them into global value chains, enhancing their role in the global market.
MSMEs are crucial to India's economy, contributing 30% to GDP and about 50% of exports. Recognising their importance, the government is dedicated to fostering an environment where MSMEs can flourish and extend their global presence. This commitment is evident in ongoing FTA negotiations with major partners like the European Union, the United Kingdom, and Australia.
Despite the opportunities FTAs present, MSMEs encounter significant hurdles. These include information gaps, limited access to affordable finance, regulatory burdens, market access issues, and the need for skill development. The government and industry stakeholders are collaborating to address these challenges effectively.
FTAs offer a platform for MSMEs to integrate into Global Value Chains (GVCs). By streamlining customs duties, these agreements facilitate smoother goods movement and improve manufacturing efficiency. This enhances MSME competitiveness and aids their integration into global supply chains.
One of the primary objectives of FTAs is to tackle information asymmetries that MSMEs face in trade. By sharing best practices and trade-enabling knowledge, FTAs aim to equip MSMEs with essential information for navigating international trade complexities. Additionally, digitisation of processes like e-documentation and e-billing is emphasised to streamline export operations.
The ongoing FTA negotiations focus on tariff concessions that promise job creation and benefits for MSMEs. However, these agreements also introduce stricter climate and labour standards. Meeting these standards may require additional efforts and costs for MSMEs, but the government is committed to providing necessary support.
Addressing Information Asymmetries and Digitisation
FTAs are pivotal in addressing information asymmetries faced by MSMEs. By sharing best practices and trade-enabling knowledge, FTAs aim to equip MSMEs with essential information for navigating international trade complexities. Additionally, digitisation of processes like e-documentation and e-billing is emphasised to streamline export operations.

The government's strategic FTA negotiations aim to empower MSMEs by addressing key challenges and facilitating integration into global value chains. By providing necessary support and fostering a conducive business environment, India seeks to unlock the full potential of MSMEs in the global marketplace.
Through these efforts, India aims to empower its MSMEs, enabling them to thrive globally while significantly contributing to economic growth and job creation within the nation.
