Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman Asserts Banks Must Not Deny Loans to MSMEs Under Emergency Credit Scheme
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman emphasised that banks must not refuse loans to MSMEs under the emergency credit scheme. Any such refusal should be reported. As of July 23, 2020, banks have sanctioned a total of Rs. 1,30,491.79 crore under this scheme, with Rs. 82,065.01 crore already disbursed.

The government introduced a Rs. 3 lakh crore collateral-free loan initiative for MSMEs as part of the Aatmanirbhar Bharat Package. This measure aims to support small and medium enterprises during challenging times by providing them with necessary financial assistance without requiring collateral.
Sitharaman stated at a FICCI event, "Banks cannot refuse credit to MSMEs covered under emergency credit facility. If refused, such instances must be reported. I will look into it." This underscores the government's commitment to ensuring that MSMEs receive the support they need.
The hospitality sector, including hotels and aviation, may receive a one-time loan restructuring scheme or an extension of the moratorium. The Finance Ministry and RBI are collaborating on a plan to address these needs. Sitharaman acknowledged the sector's requirements and confirmed ongoing discussions with RBI.
"I fully understand the requirements of the hospitality sector on extension of the moratorium or restructuring. We are working with RBI on this," she mentioned, highlighting efforts to provide relief to industries severely impacted by the pandemic.
The emergency credit scheme and potential support for hospitality reflect the government's broader strategy to stabilise key sectors and stimulate economic recovery. By facilitating access to credit and considering moratorium extensions, these measures aim to mitigate financial strain on businesses.
