CM Yogi Announces ‘Road Safety Month’ In Uttar Pradesh Till Jan 31

Uttar Pradesh has declared a month-long Road Safety Month to reduce crashes and fatalities, focusing on 20 high-risk districts with a five-point strategy covering education, enforcement, engineering, emergency care, and behavioural change. The campaign aligns with 2023 accident data and national highway safety insights, emphasising pedestrian rights and environmental safeguards.

Uttar Pradesh is marking a month-long road safety drive until January 31, with the government targeting a sharp fall in crashes and deaths, and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath setting a specific objective of reducing fatalities in 20 accident-prone districts to zero through a special campaign.

The initiative runs under the pledge of “protecting our families and our future” and aims to change how both motorists and pedestrians behave on roads. The state government links this push to recent data showing that Uttar Pradesh continues to record India’s highest road accident death toll.

In December, CM Yogi announced that January would be observed as 'Road Safety Month’ across Uttar Pradesh, citing official figures that recorded more than 46,000 road accidents in the state, which led to over 24,000 deaths in a single year, highlighting the urgency of the programme.

Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways data for 2023 further underlines the challenge. The report 'Road Accidents in India 2023’ notes that Uttar Pradesh registered 44,534 accidents in 2023, with 23,652 people killed. The state also reported 8,446 fatalities on National Highways, the highest figure in the country.

Explaining the current campaign, CM Adityanath posted on X: "Until January 31st, we are observing 'Road Safety Month' across the state. This is a pledge to protect our families and our future. Our goal is to bring about a change in the road behaviour of drivers and pedestrians. A special campaign is being conducted in 20 accident-prone districts of the state to bring the road accident death rate down to zero," CM Adityanath posted on X.

Officials have identified more than 3,000 accident-prone spots across Uttar Pradesh. The state plans to act using a five-point 'E’ strategy, covering Education, Enforcement, Engineering, and Emergency Care, with an added focus on improving driver behaviour, including better awareness about pedestrian rights on all types of roads.

The Chief Minister stressed stricter checks and public responsibility on X, writing: "While the police will strictly enforce the rules to make the state's roads safe and accessible for all, everyone's cooperation is also expected. Using a mobile phone while driving can be fatal for you and others. Follow the speed limit. Speeding and drunk driving are among the leading causes of fatal accident," the CM wrote, adding that "helmets and seat belts are not mere accessories."

CM Adityanath also appealed to parents and drivers, stating: "They ensure your safety and the safety of your family. Parents have a responsibility to ensure that minor children do not drive vehicles. Pay close attention to pedestrians and be sensitive towards them. Remember, they have equal rights on the road. I am confident that you will follow traffic rules to make the state's roads safe and accessible."

Alongside the Uttar Pradesh road safety month, CM Adityanath reviewed ongoing and proposed National Highways Authority of India projects in the state via video conference, and said that while expanding road infrastructure is essential for Uttar Pradesh, such development should not undermine environmental safeguards and long-term ecological stability.

The Chief Minister said the state aims to plant 35 crore saplings this year. CM Adityanath repeated the policy that trees are to be cut only when there is no alternative, and any permitted felling must be matched by compensatory plantation greater than the number removed.

During the district-wise review of highways and the wider Uttar Pradesh road safety drive, the Chief Minister instructed that coordination between NHAI officials and district administrations should remain strong and continuous, so that projects proceed smoothly while road design, enforcement and emergency response all support the broader target of reducing crashes and deaths.
