Vat Purnima Vrat: Celebrating Devotion and Longevity in Hindu Tradition

Vat Purnima Vrat, also known as Vat Savitri Vrat, is a significant Hindu festival celebrated by married women. This festival is observed to commemorate the legendary tale of Savitri, who outwitted Lord Yama, the god of death. The festival falls on 10th June 2025, a Tuesday. Women observe this day with great devotion for the long life of their husbands.

The importance of Vat Purnima Vrat is highlighted in Hindu scriptures like Bhavishyothra Purana, Skanda Purana, and Mahabharat. The story of Savitri's penance and her determination to bring back her husband Satyavan's life is central to this festival. It is a day that celebrates love, devotion, and the power of a wife's prayers.

Vat Purnima Vrat A Celebration of Devotion

The story begins with King Ashvapati and Queen Malavi of Madra kingdom, who were blessed with a daughter named Savitri after worshipping God Savitr. Savitri chose Satyavan, son of King Dyumatsena, as her husband despite knowing his short life span. As the day of Satyavan's demise neared, Savitri fasted and followed him to the forest.

When Satyavan lay under a Banyan tree, Lord Yama came to take his soul. Savitri's determination impressed Yama, who granted her three wishes. She asked for her father-in-law's eyesight and kingdom to be restored, 100 sons for her father, and a son from Satyavan. Yama granted these wishes, thus bringing Satyavan back to life.

How Vat Purnima Vrat is Celebrated

On this day, married women wake up before sunrise and take a holy dip in sacred rivers using Amla and sesame seeds. They then offer prayers to the Vat tree (Banyan tree), tie a sacred thread around it, and perform Parikrama (circumambulation). This ritual symbolises their devotion and prayers for their husband's long life.

Women dress in bridal attire or red clothes on this auspicious day. The food associated with this festival includes pulses, rice, mangoes, jackfruits, palm fruits, kendu, bananas, and other fruits. These items are often part of the offerings made during the rituals.
