Sheetala Ashtami, also known as Basoda Puja or Basoda Ashtami, is a significant Hindu festival. It is celebrated in Northern India, particularly in Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Uttar Pradesh. This festival honours Goddess Sheetala, an incarnation of Goddess Durga, believed to cure diseases and ward off evil spirits.

Sheetala Ashtami falls on the 8th day of Krishna Paksha in the Chaitra month. The name "Sheetala" means coolness, and the goddess is believed to have healing powers. Devotees worship her for protection against diseases like measles and smallpox. The goddess is depicted holding a broom, symbolising the removal of negativity and illness.

On Sheetala Ashtami, devotees wake up early for a holy bath in a river or pond. They wear clean clothes and offer Arghya to Lord Surya. Visiting a temple dedicated to Goddess Sheetala is common. Offerings include Rabri, Bajra, curd, and turmeric. These are later distributed among the poor.

Celebration Practices

Cooking is avoided on Sheetala Ashtami. Devotees prepare food a day before and consume it on the festival day. The day begins with a holy bath and offering Arghya to Lord Surya. Listening or reciting 'Basoda Vrat Katha' is also part of the celebration. Sharing food with the needy is encouraged.

Historical Story of Sheetala Mata

The Skanda Purana mentions a story about Mata Sheetla. She holds a vase, soup, broom, and neem leaves while riding a donkey. A demon named Jvarasura was born from Lord Shiva's sweat and spread diseases. Worshipping Sheetla Mata is believed to relieve physical pain and cure ailments like measles.

A village woman was a devoted worshipper of Sheetla Mata. One day, a fire broke out in her village, burning all huts except hers. She credited her devotion to Sheetla Mata for saving her home. Inspired by her story, other villagers began worshipping the goddess too.
