Sakat Chauth: Celebrating Lord Ganesha's Blessings With Traditional Rituals And Fasting

Sakat Chauth, also known as Sankashti Chaturthi, is a significant Hindu festival dedicated to Lord Ganesha and Sakat Mata. Celebrated on 17th January 2025, this festival holds immense importance for devotees. It is believed that fasting on this day brings blessings of health and prosperity. The festival is especially important in the month of Magh, according to the Hindu calendar.

Sakat Chauth is also called Vraktundi Chaturthi. Devotees prepare Tilkut, a sweet made from sesame seeds and jaggery, to offer to Lord Ganesha. This offering is believed to bring blessings and prosperity. The festival is also known as 'Tilkuta Chauth' due to the preparation of Tilkut. Worshipping Lord Ganesha on this day is said to bless children with a long and healthy life.

Sakat Chauth Celebrating Lord Ganesha

On Sakat Chauth, devotees observe a fast and wear red clothes as part of the rituals. They place an idol of Lord Ganesha in a clean area and offer dhoop, ghee, fruits, flowers, sesame seeds, sweet potatoes, ladoos, and modak. Jaggery, druva, and guava are also offered to seek forgiveness and blessings from Lord Ganesha.

During the night, Arghya is offered to the Moon with roli, chandan, honey, and milk. In northern India, women worship Sakat Mata for their children's well-being. These rituals are performed with devotion and faith in the deities.

Traditional Attire for Sakat Chauth

The traditional attire for Sakat Chauth includes wearing a Kurta Pajama for men and a Saree for women. These outfits reflect cultural heritage and add to the festive spirit. Wearing red clothes during the rituals is considered auspicious.

Food Associated with Sakat Chauth

The festival features special foods like Tilkut, Bajre ki tikiya, laayi ke laddo, sesame seeds, and jaggery-based dishes. These foods are prepared with devotion and offered to Lord Ganesha during the puja. They hold cultural significance and are enjoyed by families during the festival.

Historical Story of Sakat Chauth

The story behind Sakat Chauth involves a king who faced challenges in baking clay vessels. The royal priest suggested sacrificing children to solve the problem. An old woman's son was chosen for sacrifice. She gave him hazelnut, druva, and roli to pray to Sakat Mata and Lord Ganesha.

The boy prayed fervently while his mother fasted on the Chaturthi tithi of Magh month. Their devotion saved him from sacrifice. This story highlights the power of faith and devotion during Sakat Chauth.

Kathaa Associated with Sakat Chauth

A famous tale tells of a lady who performed puja for Sakat Mata. At midnight, two kids named Sakatua-Bakatua visited her home asking for food. She offered them Tilkut made from sesame seeds and jaggery. They ate it and left droppings all over her house.

The next morning, these droppings turned into gold. Her co-sister tried to replicate this out of greed but failed as her intentions were not pure. This story teaches about selflessness and devotion during Sakat Chauth.
