Navpatrika Puja: Celebrating Durga's Victory Over Evil in 2024
Navpatrika Puja, also known as Maha Saptami Puja, is a significant festival celebrated on 10th October 2024, which falls on a Thursday. This festival is an integral part of Durga Puja and is observed with great devotion. It involves the worship of nine plants, collectively known as Navpatrika, and the invocation of Goddess Durga within them.
The Navpatrika Puja takes place on Maha Saptami. On this day, nine plants, including a branch of the Bilva tree, are worshipped. These plants are purified through a ritual called Abhishekam. After purification, the Navpatrika is adorned with red or orange cloth and placed next to the idol of Goddess Durga.

The Prana Pratishthan ceremony follows, where the idol of Goddess Durga is consecrated. This is succeeded by the Shodashopachara Puja, where Goddess Durga is worshipped with sixteen different puja items. An idol of Lord Ganesha is also placed and worshipped during this ceremony.
Navpatrika Puja holds great significance for the farmer community. Worshipping the Navpatrika or 'nine plants' is believed to ensure a good yield. The festival symbolises the victory of good over evil, as it is part of the larger Durga Puja celebrations.
Legend Behind Navpatrika Puja
The story behind Navpatrika Puja is linked to the legend of Mahishasura, a demonic Buffalo King. Mahishasura was granted invincibility by Lord Brahma after years of penance. With his boon, no man or God could kill him. He began to destroy the world and became a threat to all three realms.
To defeat him, Goddess Durga emerged from the collective energies of the Gods as a divine feminine power. Her emergence marked the victory of good over evil, which is celebrated during Durga Puja.
