Nag Panchami 2024: Date, Time, Puja Rituals, Significance And Wishes To Celebrate This Day
Lord Shiva, Goddess Parvati, and Naga deities are revered during Nag Panchami. This year the festival will be celebrated on August 9. The snake god is considered the deity of water and food in Hindu mythology. This festival typically falls on the fifth day of the Shravan Or Sawan month, which is in July or August.

The term "Nag" means snake, and "Panchami" refers to the fifth day. Devotees believe that worshipping Nagas during this time pleases Lord Shiva, bringing happiness and prosperity. An interesting tradition involves using cow dung to create a snake shape at the main entrance of homes. This practice is believed to ward off real snakes from entering the house.
Nag Panchami Rituals
On Nag Panchami, devotees place a cow dung snake figure at their house entrance as it is considered auspicious. Pandit Hitendra Kumar Sharma explains that this tradition has ancient roots and ensures no fear of snakes inside the house.
Nag Panchami Puja Muhurat - 06:18 AM to 08:52 AM
Religious scriptures mention that Lord Shiva has a snake around his neck, so he is worshipped along with Goddess Parvati and the Naga deity on this day. People believe that such worship brings prosperity and blessings from both Lord Shiva and the snake deity.
It is believed that any Puja offered to snakes reaches the serpent gods. Hence, people worship live snakes on this day as representatives of serpent gods revered in Hinduism. Although there are several serpent gods, the following twelve are worshipped during Nag Panchami Puja:
- Ananta
- Vasuki
- Shesha
- Padma
- Kambala
- Karkotaka
- Ashvatara
- Dhritarashtra
- Shankhapala
- Kaliya
- Takshaka
- Pingala

Conservation Awareness
The festival also underscores the importance of conserving snakes. Various organisations and community workers use this occasion to educate people about snakes' role in the ecosystem. They aim to create awareness about protecting these creatures.
In many regions, people worship real snakes or their idols by offering milk, rice, and sweets. Snake charmers are often hired to bring live snakes to temples for worship. Many devotees fast on this day, visiting temples dedicated to snake deities where they pray, chant mantras, and perform rituals seeking blessings from the snakes.
This celebration highlights not only religious devotion but also cultural practices aimed at maintaining ecological balance. It serves as a reminder of how intertwined nature and spirituality are in Hindu traditions.
Devotees believe that observing these rituals will bring them closer to divine blessings while promoting harmony with nature. The festival's customs reflect deep respect for all living beings, emphasising coexistence with wildlife.
The significance of Nag Panchami extends beyond religious observance; it fosters an understanding of environmental conservation through traditional practices. By honouring snakes, devotees acknowledge their crucial role in maintaining ecological equilibrium.
