Mysore Dasara: Celebration Of Tradition And Its Historical Significance
Mysore Dasara, also known as Dasara, is a grand festival celebrated in Mysore, Karnataka. It is a 10-day event that culminates on Vijayadashami, marking the victory of good over evil. The festival is famous for its vibrant processions, cultural performances, and traditional rituals.
Vijayadashami signifies the triumph of truth over evil. It commemorates the day when Goddess Chamundeshwari defeated the demon Mahishasura. This victory is symbolic of the inner self's triumph over worldly attachments and desires.

Mysore Dasara has its roots in the 14th century during the Vijayanagar Empire. The Wodeyars of Mysore later transformed it into a grand spectacle. In 1610, Raja Wodeyar I reintroduced the Navaratri celebrations at Srirangapatna. Krishnaraja Wodeyar III started the tradition of holding a special durbar during Dussehra in 1805.
The Legend of Mahishasura
Mahishasura was a demon who received a boon from Lord Brahma that no man or animal could kill him. He misused this power to conquer realms. The gods created Goddess Durga to defeat him. After a fierce battle, Durga killed Mahishasura, symbolising the victory of good over evil.
How Mysore Dasara is Celebrated
The celebrations begin with a puja at Mysore Palace. The king takes a ceremonial bath and worships the family deity. He then ascends the throne, and conches and trumpets announce the start of the parade. The procession features Goddess Chamundeshwari's idol on a decorated elephant, ending at Bannimantap Ground.
Key Rituals During Mysore Dasara
Each evening of Navaratri is marked by ceremonies followed by acrobatics, wrestling, and fireworks. On the seventh day, the king venerates Goddess Saraswati and Mahishasuramardhini. On Mahanavami, or the ninth day, the royal sword is worshipped.
