Mahalaya Marks the Beginning of Durga Puja and End of Pitru Paksha

Mahalaya, also known as Mahalaya Amavasya or Sarva Pitru Amavasya, is a significant Hindu festival. It marks the beginning of Durga Puja and the end of 'Pitru Paksha'. The Devatas sought help from the Trinity—Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesh. Their combined anger took the form of Devi Durga. On this day, she is said to have defeated Mahishasura, symbolising the victory of virtue over vice.

The story behind Mahalaya involves the creation of Goddess Durga by Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesh to destroy Mahishasura. Corrupted by his power, Mahishasura attacked the Devtas and threatened their realm. In response to their prayers, a divine light emerged from the Devtas' bodies, forming Goddess Durga. This day commemorates her battle with Mahishasura and her ultimate victory.

How Mahalaya is Celebrated

On Mahalaya Amavasya, devotees rise early to worship Goddess Durga. They listen to and sing 'Chandipath’, 'Mahishasura Mardini’, and other religious songs and mantras. Sculptors paint the eyes of Goddess Durga on this day. Many people also bid farewell to their ancestors. It is believed that in the evening, Maa Durga descends to Earth to bless her devotees.

The key rituals of Mahalaya include waking up early to worship Goddess Durga and listening to sacred chants like 'Chandipath’ and 'Mahishasura Mardini’. Devotees also perform rituals to honour their ancestors. Offering oblations on this day is believed to free one from worldly sins.
