Maha Shivratri 2025: Discover The Significance And Celebrations Honouring Lord Shiva
Maha Shivratri, also known as Shivratri or Shi Vivah, is a significant Hindu festival. Celebrated annually, it honours Lord Shiva. This festival falls on the 13th night or 14th day of the Phalgun month in the Hindu calendar. In 2025, it will be observed on Wednesday, 26th February.
Maha Shivratri holds special importance for women. Unmarried women pray to Lord Shiva for a husband like Him. Married women seek blessings for their husband's and family's well-being. The festival marks the day when Lord Shiva consumed poison during the ocean churning, earning the name Neelkantha.

According to legend, Lord Vishnu and Brahma once debated their supremacy. To settle this, Lord Shiva appeared as a divine linga. Vishnu searched for its origin while Brahma sought its end. Neither succeeded. Brahma lied about finding the end with a Ketaki flower's help. Shiva cursed Brahma and the flower for deceit.
Kathaa Associated with Maha Shivratri
Maha Shivratri is also linked to Lord Shiva's marriage to Goddess Parvati. After Sati's sacrifice, Shiva mourned deeply. He later married Parvati, another form of Goddess Shakti. Another story tells of a hunter who unknowingly worshipped Shiva by dropping bilva leaves on a shivlingam while hiding from a lion.
How Maha Shivratri is Celebrated
Devotees stay awake all night, chanting hymns in praise of Lord Shiva. Many observe fasts throughout the day and night. They break their fast only after offering water and bilva leaves to the Shiva linga. This practice symbolises devotion and spiritual awakening.
Traditional Attire for Maha Shivratri
On Maha Shivratri, traditional attire is preferred. Men often wear kurta pyjama or dhoti kurta, while women choose sarees or other ethnic wear. These outfits reflect cultural heritage and add to the festive spirit of the occasion.
Food During Maha Shivratri
While there is no specific food associated with Maha Shivratri, many people opt for falahaar or fruit-based meals during fasting. This simple diet helps maintain energy levels while observing religious practices throughout the day.
Muhurat Time for Maha Shivratri
The muhurat time is crucial for performing rituals during Maha Shivratri. Devotees follow specific timings to ensure their prayers are most effective. These times are calculated based on astrological positions and are widely observed by followers.
