Lakshmi Pooja: Understanding the Rituals and Significance of This Diwali Festival

Lakshmi Pooja, also known as Lokkhi Pujo, is a significant festival celebrated on the third day of Diwali. This year, it falls on Friday, 1st November 2024. The festival honours Goddess Lakshmi, the deity of wealth and prosperity. People perform rituals to seek her blessings for good fortune throughout the year.

Goddess Lakshmi is revered as the Goddess of wealth, prosperity, beauty, and fortune. She is believed to have emerged from the ocean during the churning of the Samudra Manthan. Her presence during Diwali makes her the most significant deity for this festival. Performing Lakshmi Pooja is believed to bring prosperity and happiness.

Lakshmi Pooja Rituals and Significance

Lakshmi Pooja is performed on Amavasya, the dark night when Goddess Lakshmi was born. People clean their homes thoroughly as it is believed that Goddess Lakshmi visits the cleanest home first. Diyas are lit to illuminate her path. The pooja involves worshipping Goddess Lakshmi and singing her aarti while offering prasad.

How Lakshmi Pooja is Celebrated

To begin the pooja, spread a new cloth on a raised platform. Place rice on it and set a kalash filled three-fourths with water. Add a betel nut, coin, flower, and grains inside. Decorate with mango leaves. Cover the kalash with a dish filled with rice and draw a lotus with haldi on it.

Place the idol of Goddess Lakshmi over it and Lord Ganesha in front of the kalash. You may also place books or items related to your business nearby. Light a diya and agarbatti. Prepare panchamrit by mixing milk, curd, ghee, honey, and sugar.

Start with Ganesh pooja and offer a garland. Adore Goddess Lakshmi with haldi and kumkum. Perform the aarti to invoke her blessings and distribute prasad among family members present during the pooja.

Traditional Attire for Lakshmi Pooja

During Lakshmi Pooja, people wear traditional attire to honour the occasion. This includes sarees for women and dhotis or kurta-pajamas for men. Dressing traditionally adds to the festive spirit and respect for the rituals being performed.

Food During Lakshmi Pooja

The food prepared for Lakshmi Pooja includes sweet dishes and normal prasad. These offerings are made to Goddess Lakshmi during the pooja. After the rituals, these are distributed among family members as blessings from the deity.
