Karva Chauth is a significant Hindu festival celebrated by married women in India. It is observed for the long life and well-being of their husbands. The festival falls on 20th October 2024, which is a Sunday. Women eagerly wait for this day as it symbolises marital bliss and love.
On Karva Chauth, women dress in traditional attire. They often wear red, pink, or green sarees, lehengas, or salwar suits. Some women choose to wear their wedding sarees. There is no specific attire for men during this festival.

The deities worshipped during Karva Chauth include Karwa Mata, Goddess Parvati, Lord Shankar, and Kartikeya. Women pray to these deities for the long life and prosperity of their husbands.
Key Rituals of Karva Chauth
Women observe a nirjala fast on Karva Chauth. This means they do not consume food or water throughout the day. The fast can only be broken after sighting the moon and offering Arghya, a ritual offering to the moon.
Why Karva Chauth is Celebrated
Karva Chauth is celebrated by married Hindu women for the long life and well-being of their husbands. It is a symbol of marital bliss and love. Women wait all year to celebrate this special day with devotion and enthusiasm.
How Karva Chauth is Celebrated
Fasting and prayers are usually carried out in groups during Karva Chauth. Women narrate the story of Karwa Mata as part of the rituals. After the Puja, a Karwa filled with water, milk, precious stones, or coins is given as charity.
In the evening, women dress in another set of traditional costumes and arrange puja items to worship the moon at night. Upon moonrise, women stay under its direct view. They worship the Moon God by making symbolic offerings.
Women look at the moon through a circular sieve and then at their husbands. This marks the end of the fast and signifies their prayers for their husband's long life.
Significance of Karva Chauth
Karva Chauth holds great importance among Indian women. It is celebrated for the welfare of husbands. Women observe a day-long fast and pray for their husband's long, prosperous, and healthy life.
This festival strengthens love between couples. Nowadays, many men also observe the fast along with their wives to show support and love.
Kathaa Associated with Karva Chauth
The legend associated with Karva Chauth tells the story of Veeravati, a beautiful girl with seven loving brothers. She was married into a royal family and observed her first Karva Chauth fast at her family home.
Veeravati was impatient during her fast as she awaited moonrise. Her brothers played a trick by reflecting a mirror from behind Peepal tree leaves to mimic moonlight. Veeravati broke her fast prematurely.
Soon after eating, she learned her husband had fallen ill. Rushing to him, she encountered Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati who informed her that her husband had passed away due to her mistake.
Pleading for forgiveness, Goddess Parvati granted Veeravati a boon that her husband would return to life if she strictly followed the fast's rules henceforth. Veeravati complied diligently and her husband was revived.
