Jagannath Rath Yatra 2024: Puja Rituals

The rituals of Jagannath Rath Yatra are elaborate and steeped in tradition, involving meticulous preparations and devotional activities:
Snana Purnima: The preparations for Rath Yatra begin on Snana Purnima, which occurs a fortnight before the main event. On this day, the deities are bathed with 108 pots of water, which is believed to purify and rejuvenate them.

1. Anasara: After the Snana Purnima, the deities are kept away from public view for a period known as Anasara, during which they are believed to fall ill and undergo a period of recuperation.

2. Netrotsava: On the eve of the Rath Yatra, a ceremony called Netrotsava or "rejuvenation of the eyes" is performed, symbolizing the deities' recovery and readiness for the journey.

3. Rath Pratistha: The chariots are consecrated and decorated with flowers, cloth, and other embellishments. The three chariots - Nandighosha for Lord Jagannath, Taladhwaja for Balabhadra, and Darpadalana for Subhadra - are made from wood and are constructed anew every year.

4. Pahandi Bije: The deities are brought out of the temple in a grand procession known as Pahandi Bije. Amidst the chanting of hymns, blowing of conch shells, and beating of drums, the idols are carried to their respective chariots.

5. Chhera Pahanra: The ceremonial sweeping of the chariots by the Gajapati King of Puri, known as Chhera Pahanra, is a unique and significant ritual. This act symbolizes the humility and servitude of even the highest authority before the divine.

6. Rath Yatra Procession: The main event is the Rath Yatra procession, where the chariots are pulled by thousands of devotees through the streets of Puri to the Gundicha Temple, located about 3 kilometers away. This journey is believed to symbolize the annual visit of Lord
Jagannath to his birthplace.

7. Bahuda Yatra: After spending seven days at the Gundicha Temple, the deities return to the Jagannath Temple in a similar grand procession known as Bahuda Yatra.
