International Makeup Day: How Long Can You Safely Wear Makeup Without Damaging Your Skin?
Wearing makeup has become a daily routine for many, whether it's for work or special occasions. However, it's important to be mindful of how long you keep makeup on, as prolonged use can negatively impact your skin.
On International Makeup Day, celebrated on September 10, experts share insights on how long you can safely wear makeup and the essential steps to keep your skin healthy and glowing, as reported by Hindustan Times.

According to Dr. Madhu Chopra, a Mumbai-based cosmetologist and managing director of Studio Aesthetique, "It's generally safe to wear makeup like foundation and concealer for 8 to 12 hours, but it's essential to remove it completely before bed to allow your skin to breathe and regenerate."
How Long Can You Wear Heavy Makeup?
Dr. Chopra advises limiting heavy makeup, typically worn for special events, to a maximum of 6-8 hours. "Wearing heavy makeup for extended periods can suffocate the skin, leading to irritation, allergic reactions, breakouts, and dullness," she explains.
Risks of Wearing Makeup for Too Long
Dr. Vidushi Jain, dermatologist and medical head at Dermalinks, warns about the long-term risks associated with keeping makeup on for prolonged periods. These risks include:
- Clogged pores, leading to acne
- Skin irritation and allergic reactions
- Dryness, which can accelerate premature aging
- Worsening of existing skin conditions like eczema or rosacea
"Prolonged use of cosmetics can trap pollutants in the skin, leading to infections, dryness, and breakouts. To reduce these risks, it's crucial to prioritize hygiene, cleanse thoroughly, and use products tailored to your skin type," adds Dr. Chopra, as reported by Hindustan Times.
How to Protect Your Skin
Dr. Trishna Gupte, founder of Cosmo-Square Clinic, emphasizes that understanding your skin type is key to choosing the right products. "Select products that suit your skin type and avoid those that could cause irritation. Always check product labels for allergens and conduct a patch test if necessary," she advises.
She also stresses the importance of moisturizing and using sunscreen, regardless of your skin type. "Even oily skin needs hydration to prevent issues like flakiness and redness. Sunscreen is vital for protecting your skin from UV damage and premature aging."
To further protect your skin, Dr. Chopra recommends using a good primer, opting for lighter makeup formulas when possible, and thoroughly cleansing your skin afterward, as per media reports. By following these simple steps and being mindful of how long you wear makeup, you can maintain healthy, radiant skin while enjoying your beauty routine.
