The festival is mostly celebrated in Bihar, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Madhya Pradesh. The name Hartalika comes from 'Harat' meaning abduction and 'Aalika' meaning female friends. It signifies the story of Goddess Parvati's desire to marry Lord Shiva, against her father's wishes for her to marry Lord Vishnu.

Goddess Parvati's father wanted her to marry Lord Vishnu. However, she wished to marry Lord Shiva. Her female friends took her to a dense forest to prevent the unwanted marriage. There, Goddess Parvati meditated and practised penance for many years. She even immersed herself in the holy river Ganga. Eventually, Lord Shiva accepted her as his wife on this day.

How Hartalika Teej is Celebrated

Women observe a strict fast and worship Lord Shiva and His family by preparing makeshift idols. They wear new clothes, jewellery, and perform Solah Shringar as per Hindu traditions. Women pray for their husbands' long lives and their children's health. They listen to the Katha and seek blessings from elders. The fast is broken the next morning after bathing and worshipping deities.

On this day, women observe a strict fast without consuming food or water. They prepare makeshift idols of Lord Shiva and His family for worship. Offerings are made to the deities during prayers. Women stay awake throughout the night and break their fast after bathing and worshipping the next morning.
