Govatsa Dwadashi: Celebrating the Sacred Cow and Marking Deepavali's Start
Govatsa Dwadashi, also known as Nandini Vrat, is a significant Hindu festival celebrated on 28th October 2024. It marks the beginning of the Deepavali festivities in Maharashtra and is observed with great devotion. The festival honours cows, which are considered sacred in Hinduism. Devotees worship Nandini, the divine cow, and perform various rituals to seek blessings for prosperity and well-being.
On Govatsa Dwadashi, devotees offer a ritualistic bath to cows and apply vermillion on their foreheads. The cows and their calves are adorned with bright clothes and garlands of flowers. If a cow is not available, devotees make mud idols of cows and calves. These idols are decorated with kumkum and turmeric. An aarti is performed in the evening, and offerings like gram and sprouted moong are made to the cows.

The significance of Govatsa Dwadashi is rooted in Hindu beliefs where cows are revered as holy mothers. They provide nourishment to mankind, making them sacred. The festival's importance is mentioned in the Bhavishya Purana, which narrates the story of Nandini, the divine cow. Women observe fasts on this day for their children's well-being, while childless couples perform puja for blessings of a child.
Govatsa Dwadashi Celebrations
Govatsa Dwadashi celebrations vary across regions. In Maharashtra, it is known as Vasu Baras, marking the start of Deepavali. In Andhra Pradesh, Sripada Vallabha Aradhana Utsav is held at Pithapuram Datta Mahasamsthan. In Gujarat, it is celebrated as Vagh Baras. Devotees offer prayers to Lord Krishna, who has a profound love for cows. Many people abstain from consuming dairy products like milk, curd, and ghee on this day.
