Google Doodle Celebrates Dragon Boat Festival 2024 with Races and Cultural Festivities

The Dragon Boat Festival is a traditional Chinese holiday celebrated on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month. It honours Qu Yuan, a Chinese poet from the Warring States period. Qu Yuan drowned himself in the Miluo River after being exiled by his king.

Dragon boat races are a key part of the festival. These races take place all over China. Dragon boats are long and narrow, decorated with dragon heads and tails. Teams of 20 or more people paddle these boats. The races are very competitive, and the winning team often receives a large prize.

Besides boat races, people celebrate by eating zongzi, a type of glutinous rice dumpling, and watching lion dances. The festival is a time for families to come together and celebrate their culture. The Dragon Boat Festival is colourful and lively, celebrated all over China.

Anywhere with a view of the water will be packed with people watching dragon boat racing. Teams of up to 90 people pile into long wooden boats painted to resemble colourful dragons. After painting the eyes on the dragon to bring it to life, it’s time to paddle along to a drumbeat and reach the finish line before other teams.

Traditional activities on this day also aim to ward off bugs and illnesses as summer heat increases pest activity. Children often wear five-colour silk threads for protection. At home, people hang sachets of herbs and plants that repel bugs.

Some try egg balancing at noon, which is said to bring good luck. When it’s time for a snack, many will enjoy realgar wine and sticky rice dumplings called zongzi. This dish honours the legacy of Qu Yuan.
