Google Doodle Celebrates the Staurikosaurus: A Key Dinosaur in Evolutionary History

Today's Google Doodle celebrates the Staurikosaurus, a small dinosaur from the Late Triassic period, about 230 million years ago. This dinosaur is significant in the fossil record as one of the earliest known. It was about 2 meters long and weighed around 30 kilograms, with a long neck and sharp teeth.

The Staurikosaurus had short forelimbs but long, strong hindlimbs. It was a carnivore, likely hunting small animals like lizards and mammals. Its discovery offers crucial insights into dinosaur evolution. On this day in 2010, Alcober OA and Martinez RN published a silhouette reconstruction of its skeleton.

In 1936, paleontologist Llewellyn Ivor Prince found a theropod specimen at the Santa Maria Formation in southern Brazil. This specimen was later identified as Staurikosaurus, also known as the "Southern Cross Lizard." Radiocarbon dating places it in the late Triassic period, about 225 million years ago.

Prince's discovery remains the only evidence of Staurikosaurus, limiting our knowledge of this species. However, findings suggest it was large for an early dinosaur, measuring around 2 meters long and 80 cm tall. It weighed about 30 kilograms, similar to a large dog.

The Staurikosaurus had a long tail and ran on two legs. Its fossils indicate it was fast for its size. The predator's serrated teeth curved towards the back of its throat, aiding in catching prey. This discovery has helped paleontologists understand early dinosaur evolution.
