Today's Google Doodle shines a spotlight on Hamida Banu, a multifaceted talent from India who left an indelible mark on the worlds of cinema and sports. Born in 1933 in Hyderabad, Banu was not only a celebrated actress, dancer, and singer but also a distinguished wrestler. Her journey began in the 1950s as a dancer before she ventured into acting with her debut in the 1956 film "Anarkali". Over her career, she starred in more than 100 films, including iconic ones like "Mughal-e-Azam" and "Pakeezah".

Banu's talents extended beyond the silver screen to the stage and music. She was a successful stage actress and a gifted singer with several albums to her name. Her contributions to Indian cinema were recognized with numerous awards, including the Filmfare Award for Best Actress and the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actress. In 2005, she was honored with the Padma Shri, one of India's highest civilian awards. Banu passed away in 2009 at the age of 76, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire.

At a time when women's participation in athletics was discouraged, Banu broke barriers by competing against men and even issued an open challenge to them, wagering her hand in marriage to any man who could defeat her. Her wrestling career included a notable victory over Baba Pahalwan in 1954 and an international win against Russian wrestler Vera Chistilin.

Banu's fearless spirit and exceptional talents made her a household name in India and earned her international acclaim. Known as the "Amazon of Aligarh," her diet, training regimen, and victories were widely covered by newspapers. Beyond her sporting prowess, Hamida Banu is remembered for her courage and for staying true to herself. Today's Google Doodle celebrates not just Banu's contributions to Indian cinema but also her groundbreaking role in sports, showcasing her as a true trailblazer of her time.
