Devshayani Ekadashi 2024: History And Significance
Devshayani Ekadashi is steeped in mythological and historical significance. According to Hindu mythology, this Ekadashi marks the day when Lord Vishnu enters his cosmic sleep (Yoga Nidra) on the Sheshnag (divine serpent) in the Ksheersagar (cosmic ocean of milk). This period of Lord Vishnu's slumber lasts for four months, ending on Prabodhini Ekadashi, which marks his awakening.
The term "Devshayani" is derived from two Sanskrit words: "Deva," meaning god, and "Shayani," meaning to sleep. Thus, Devshayani Ekadashi signifies the day the gods go to sleep. During these four months of Chaturmas, many significant Hindu festivals and rituals are observed, but certain activities like marriages and major celebrations are typically avoided.
