Deep Dish Pizza Recipe: Create Authentic Chicago Style at Home
Deep Dish Pizza, also known as Chicago-style pizza, is a unique American twist on traditional Italian fare. This pizza is famous for its thick crust, which is baked with the pizza. It is filled with sauce, cheese, and various toppings. Served hot from the oven, it pairs well with salad, garlic bread, or mozzarella sticks.
Crust
- 1 tsp active dry yeast
- ¾ cup (185 ml) warm water (about 90 °F)
- 1 cup (140 g) flour
- 2 tbsp olive oil
- 1 tbsp white sugar
- ½ tsp salt
- 3 cups (400 g) additional flour
- ~1 cup (250 ml) warm water
- 4 tbsp cornmeal (optional)
Toppings
- 1 can (170-225 g) prepared or homemade pizza sauce
- 450 g shredded Mozzarella cheese
- ¼ cup (20 g) grated Romano cheese (optional)
- ¼ cup (20 g) grated Parmesan cheese (optional)

Crust
- In a mixing bowl, combine yeast and ¾ cup warm water. Let it stand for a few minutes to activate.
- Add 1 cup flour, oil, sugar, and salt to form a smooth batter. Mix in remaining flour and water until dough is slightly sticky. Adjust with more water or flour if needed.
- Knead the dough until it springs back when touched. Let it rise in a greased bowl until doubled in size.
- Punch down the dough and transfer to a floured surface. Shape it to fit a pizza pan, making an edge up the side for the crust.
Assembly
- Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C).
- Spread pizza sauce on the dough, leaving the edge uncoated. Add optional toppings like pepperoni or sausage.
- Sprinkle Mozzarella cheese evenly over the pizza. Add Parmesan and Romano cheeses if desired.
- Bake for 25-30 minutes or until crust and cheese are lightly brown. Use foil on edges if browning too quickly.
- Remove from oven and cut into about eight triangular slices for serving.

Baking Options and Tips
A black pan cooks the crust faster than a light one. Using a heated baking stone can make the crust more evenly brown. For a different crust texture, substitute olive oil with vegetable oil or butter. Letting the crust rise before baking makes it thicker.
Toppings and Variations
Add your choice of toppings like pepperoni, sausage, or vegetables. The order of toppings can change the look and taste of your pizza. For example, placing cheese under or over other ingredients creates different styles.
This Deep Dish Pizza recipe offers flexibility in crust options and topping arrangements to suit your taste preferences. Enjoy experimenting with different combinations!
