Chaitra Navaratri: Understanding the Celebration and Its Rituals
Chaitra Navaratri is a significant Hindu festival celebrated in March or April. It marks the transition from spring to summer. This festival is important for many in India, an agricultural nation. During Chaitra Navaratri, devotees worship nine forms of Goddess Durga over nine days. Each day has its own rituals and significance.
Devotees start by placing an idol or photograph of Goddess Durga. They perform Kalash Sthaapana, invoking the Goddess to reside in the Kalash throughout Navratri. Offerings include flowers, fruits, cloth, and scent. Devotees light a Diya and incense sticks, recite mantras, and perform aarti to seek blessings.

Each day of Chaitra Navaratri honours a different form of Goddess Durga. The first day celebrates Shailaputri, followed by Brahmacharini on the second day. Chandraghanta is worshipped on the third day, symbolising bravery. Kushmanda, the creator of the universe, is honoured on the fourth day.
On the fifth day, Skanda Mata is worshipped as the mother of Skanda. Katyayani is celebrated on the sixth day. Kalrathri is honoured on the seventh day for her fierce energy. Maha Gauri blesses devotees on the eighth day by forgiving their sins. Siddhidatri is worshipped on the ninth day for her eight siddhis.
Traditional Attire and Food
During Chaitra Navaratri, people wear traditional attire such as sarees, kurta pyjamas, and dhoti kurtas. Special foods are prepared for the festival, including Kuttu ki Puri, Singhade ka Halwa, Singhare ka Pakore, Sabudana Vadaa, and Sabudana Khichdi.
Historical Stories of Chaitra Navaratri
A popular story involves a Brahmin named Sunantha who was a devotee of Goddess Durga. His daughter was married to a leprosy patient as a lesson for her vanity. She fasted for nine nights without water in devotion to the Goddess. Her husband was cured and became healthy and popular.
Another story tells of King Dhruvasindhu's son, Prince Sudarshan. After fleeing his kingdom due to an attack, he found refuge with Sage Bharadwaja. The prince unknowingly invoked the Divine Mother by repeating 'Kleem'. The Goddess blessed him with power and weapons to regain his kingdom.
