Interestingly, despite being a no moon day, Bheemana Amavasya in Karnataka is a special occasion for both married and unmarried women to seek blessings for the men in their lives or future husbands. Known also as 'Jyoti Bheemeshwara Vratam,' this day is significant because any fortnight with a new moon is considered auspicious for Hindus. It is believed that offerings made to forefathers during this time return as blessings. Additionally, it marks the period when Lord Shiva was impressed by Goddess Parvathi's devotion and accepted her as his wife. This is why it is sacred for women to fast on this day, demonstrating their devotion and seeking blessings for the men in their families.
Bheemana Amavasya 2024: Date And Time
This year, Bheemana Amavasya will be observed on 4th August 2024. The Amavasya Tithi begins at 3:51 PM on August 3rd and ends at 4:43 PM on August 4th. Women, both married and unmarried, come together to pray for the well-being of the men in their lives or those who will enter their lives in the future.
Married women typically observe this fast for at least nine years after marriage, seeking longevity and happiness for their husbands. Unmarried women fast with hopes of finding a suitable partner. Sisters also fast for their brothers' health and longevity, similar to Raksha Bandhan in North India.
Significance Of Jyothir Bheemeshwara Vrata
The festival is a heartwarming celebration of love, devotion, and spiritual growth. Women pray for the well-being, prosperity, and happiness of their male counterparts. This observance strengthens family bonds and reinforces values of love, care, and protection within families.
The rituals involve creating Kalikamba lamps from mud to symbolise Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. A yellow thread called Kankana is wrapped around these lamps to signify their divine union. Thambittu or flour lamps are also made to purify the mind and heart.
Rituals Of Jyothir Bheemeshwara Vrata
During the pooja, Kadubus or dough balls are prepared along with traditional dishes like Idlis, Kozhakattai, modaks, and wheat balls. These are later playfully smashed by young boys or male members of the household. Women observing the fast should avoid fried foods and instead consume a simple meal of fruits, milk, and water.
This traditional ritual is also known as Deepastambha pooja or Vrata, emphasising illumination and spiritual growth. The day strengthens sibling bonds as brothers shower gifts on their sisters in return for their prayers.
