Akal Bodhon: Celebrating The Triumph Of Goddess Durga Over Evil

Akal Bodhon, also known as Akaal Bodhon or Sharadiya Navaratra, is a significant festival celebrated on 10th September 2024, which falls on a Wednesday. This festival is dedicated to Goddess Durga and is marked by traditional rituals and prayers. Akal Bodhon holds a unique place in Hindu mythology due to its association with Lord Rama and his devotion to Goddess Durga.

The festival symbolises the power of women and the triumph of good over evil. According to legend, Goddess Durga killed the demon Mahishasura on this day. Mahishasura was a Buffalo Demon who received a boon from Lord Brahma, making him invincible. With his newfound powers, he wreaked havoc across the world, threatening all three realms.

Akal Bodhon Triumph of Goddess Durga

To stop Mahishasura, Goddess Durga emerged from the combined energies of the Gods as a divine feminine force. Her victory over Mahishasura represents the triumph of good over evil. This story highlights the significance of Akal Bodhon in celebrating divine strength and righteousness.

Akal Bodhon is celebrated because Lord Rama invoked Goddess Durga to defeat Ravana, the demon king. To complete the puja, Lord Rama needed 108 blue lotuses. However, Goddess Durga took one lotus to test his devotion, leaving him with only 107 lotuses.

Lord Rama, known as 'Padma-lochan' for his lotus-like eyes, decided to offer his own eye as a substitute. Pleased by his devotion, Goddess Durga appeared and granted him the power to kill Ravana. This act of devotion by Lord Rama is why Akal Bodhon is celebrated.

How Akal Bodhon is Celebrated

The ritual of 'Bodhon’ involves invoking Goddess Durga from her sleep. Since it is an untimely awakening, it is called 'Akal Bodhon.’ The Dakshinayan Gods and Goddesses sleep for six months. As Durga Puja occurs during this period, Goddess Durga is awakened before worship.

The Akal Bandhan ritual involves installing a Kalash at the base of the sacred Bel tree. Prayers and mantras are recited to awaken Devi Durga. The 'Adibas' ritual involves invoking Goddess Durga's name and symbolically installing her in the Bilva tree with prayers.

Historical Story Behind Akal Bodhon

Ravana performed intense penance for years to receive a boon from Lord Brahma. He offered nine of his heads to Lord Brahma and was about to sacrifice his tenth when Brahma appeared. Pleased with his devotion, Brahma granted him a boon that no god, demon, animal, or bird could kill him.

During one conquest, Ravana tried to uproot Mount Kailash but was pinned down by Lord Shiva's toe. Realising his mistake, Ravana sang hymns for a thousand years until Shiva released him. Pleased with Ravana's devotion, Shiva awarded him the Chandrahas sword.
