West Bengal Elections: A Close Look At the Crucial Seats In The Third Phase

The third phase of the West Bengal elections, happening on May 7, focuses on four key seats: Malda Uttar, Malda Dakshin, Jangipur, and Murshidabad. These areas are crucial because Muslim votes play a significant role in determining the outcome. Each seat has its unique set of candidates and political dynamics, making this election phase particularly noteworthy.

In Malda Uttar, BJP's current MP Khagen Murmu is up against Trinamool's Prasun Banerjee, a former IPS officer, with Congress putting forward Mustaq Ahmad. This seat is divided into seven assembly segments. In the last election, TMC secured four of these, while BJP took three. The competition is tight, with internal disagreements within the Ghani Khan Chowdhury family affecting TMC's campaign. Mausam Noor from the Chowdhury family switched from Congress to TMC, adding to the political intrigue.

West Bengal Elections A Close Look At the Crucial Seats In The Third Phase

Malda Dakshin might see a three-way fight among candidates from Congress, BJP, and TMC. Congress has nominated Isha Khan Chowdhury, BJP has Sripura Mitra Chowdhury, and TMC has chosen Shahnawaz Ali Rehan. The last election saw a narrow victory for Congress by just 8,222 votes over BJP, with TMC not far behind. The BJP candidate is focusing her campaign on the Digital India initiative and local culture to win over voters.

Murshidabad is also gearing up for a competitive race with CPM's Mohammed Salim, TMC's Abu Taher Khan, and BJP's Gauri Shankar Ghosh vying for the seat. Despite TMC winning most assembly segments in the area during the 2021 elections, the presence of a seasoned politician like Mohammed Salim makes the battle for this seat unpredictable.

Lastly, Jangipur has a special connection with former President Pranab Mukherjee, who won here in 2004 and 2009. The seat remains closely associated with his legacy. This year's candidates are yet to be seen if they can continue or change the narrative set by Mukherjee's victories.

Overall, these four seats in West Bengal are set for an intense electoral battle with significant implications based on Muslim voter preferences and local political dynamics.
