‘Friend Raped Friend’: TMC Leader’s Remark On Gang-Rape Sparks Controversy
Trinamool Congress MP Kalyan Banerjee has drawn widespread criticism for his comments on the recent alleged gang-rape of a law student from South Calcutta Law College. While speaking to the media, Banerjee remarked, "What can be done if a friend rapes his friend? Will the police be deployed in schools? This was a case of students committing a crime against another student. Who will protect her?" He further advised women to be cautious about the company they keep, particularly around men with "dirty mindsets," and questioned how authorities could realistically police interactions between students in educational settings.
His remarks have sparked sharp reactions across the political spectrum and among women's rights groups, who have accused Banerjee of minimizing the gravity of the crime and shifting blame onto the survivor. Critics argue that his statements reflect a lack of institutional accountability and promote survivor-shaming.

The BJP condemned Banerjee's comments as "disgraceful," alleging that the Trinamool Congress is attempting to shield the accused due to political connections. One of the accused, Monojit Mishra, has been linked to the TMC's student wing, and photographs of him with senior TMC leaders have surfaced online, further fueling political tensions.
Despite his controversial remarks, Banerjee did assert that the perpetrators must be arrested and punished. However, he maintained that no legal system or police presence could fully prevent such crimes unless there is a broader shift in societal attitudes.
The incident has reignited public debate over the safety of women on campuses, the influence of political organizations in educational institutions, and the need for urgent reforms to ensure accountability and protection for students.
Police have arrested all three accused and are continuing their investigation. The inquiry includes serious allegations that the assault was recorded and the survivor threatened with the video. The Trinamool Congress leadership has stated that all the accused will face the strictest legal action, regardless of their political affiliations.
The case continues to stir strong emotions across West Bengal, with growing calls for justice, institutional reform, and greater safeguards for women in educational spaces.
