Saradha scam: CBI arrests Mamata's minister Madan Mitra

Kolkata, Dec 12: West Bengal Transport Minister Madan Mitra was arrested by the CBI on Friday in connection to the Saradha chit fund scam. [You have rested enough, now come for investigation, CBI told Madan]

Mitra was arrested after an interrogation that continued for over five hours at CGO Complex here.

The Trinamool Congress leader was quizzed in two phases on Friday and CBI sleuths were not satisfied with his answer. The central intelligence agency hence decided to take Mitra into its custody for more interrogation.

Mitra became an MLA from Bishnupur in South 24 Parganas district of West Bengal in 2009. It was also from this same place that the Saradha Group had begun its journey. It is alleged that Mitra granted favour to Saradha chief Sudipta Sen in lieu of money and continued to maintain a good relation with the latter.

Mitra's former aide Bapi Karim accused him of receiving monetary favours from Sen at various points of time. Though Mitra claimed that he had no links with Saradha, but television footages released recently showed him praising Sen at a public function.

Sudipta Sen's lawyer Naresh Bhaloria was also arrested

Mitra becomes the fourth member of the ruling Trinmaool Congress to have been arrested in connection with the Saradha scam, after Rajya Sabha MPs kunal Ghosh and Srinjoy Bose and former top police officer Rajat Majumdar.
