RG Kar Medical College Expels Doctors, Interns And Students Over ‘Sexual Misconduct, Threat Culture'
RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata has expelled ten individuals, including doctors and interns. They faced allegations of misconduct such as threatening others with exam failure or hostel eviction, coercing juniors to join a political party, sexual harassment, and physical violence. This decision follows protests over the rape and murder of a junior doctor at the institution.
The expelled group includes Ashish Pandey, a house staff member linked to former principal Sandip Ghosh. Ghosh was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for financial irregularities and corruption. The college council convened a special meeting after receiving an Institutional Enquiry Committee report that found these individuals guilty.

Allegations and Evidence
The enquiry revealed that the accused were involved in various forms of intimidation. They threatened students with failing exams or being ousted from hostels. Additionally, they forced juniors to buy drugs and alcohol at night, perform obscene acts, and attend political rallies. There were also accusations of forceful money collection for events without audits.
Further allegations included forcing students into the boys' common room for "DIASING," which involves physical and mental torture. Some were coerced into exchanging duties for money or threatened with withheld internship completion. False FIRs were lodged against students, some as severe as sexual assault claims.
Response to Complaints
Following the tragic incident involving a junior doctor, several complaints about a "threat culture" on campus emerged. On September 10, notices were sent to 51 individuals accused of fostering intimidation. These individuals faced an inquiry committee for further investigation.
The inquiry committee's findings led to the expulsion decision until further notice. Names with substantial evidence of sexual harassment have been forwarded to the Internal Complaints Committee for further action.
Institutional Action
The college authorities took decisive steps after receiving the inquiry report. The special college council meeting aimed to address these serious allegations comprehensively. The expulsion serves as a measure to maintain discipline and safety within the institution.
This situation highlights ongoing challenges in educational institutions regarding misconduct and abuse of power. It underscores the importance of addressing such issues promptly to ensure a safe environment for all students and staff members.
