Modi asked Tripathi, who is the chancellor of the university, before departing from the city where he had gone on a brief visit on Sunday (Feb 21) the reason for not taking action on those who made such slogans in the university campus. He asked the chancellor why the latter did not create pressure on the vice-chancellor of Jadavpur University to identify those who were behind the incident, the report added.

It has also been reported that a day after the PM returned to New Delhi, the Bengal BJP leadership has been asked to launch a fierce campaign against the CPI(M), the main Opposition party in the state. Observers feel the plan to attack the Opposition instead of the ruling party ahead the Assembly elections due in some time has a long-term goal.
State BJP president Dilip Ghosh launched an attack against the CPI(M) the very next day, the daily report said, in which he accused the Opposition party of preaching democratic ideals but practising little.
Protests took place in the prestigious university in Kolkata in the wake of the arrest of Kanhaiya Kumar, the president of the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students' Union for allegedly raising anti-India slogans to mark the third anniversary of the hanging of 2001 Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru.
