Mahua Moitra Slams TMC Colleagues Over Misogynistic Remarks In Gang-Rape Case
The alleged gang-rape of a law student at South Calcutta Law College has not only provoked public outrage but also exposed deepening internal divisions within the Trinamool Congress (TMC). Controversial remarks by senior party leaders and the party's handling of the issue have drawn widespread criticism.
Controversial Statements Draw Fire
TMC MLA Madan Mitra faced sharp backlash after he appeared to partially blame the victim, saying the incident "would not have happened if she hadn't gone there." He further suggested that the student should have informed someone or taken friends along to avoid the situation.

Adding to the controversy, TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee made a statement asking, "What can be done if a friend rapes his friend? Will the police be in schools?" He implied that such incidents are bound to happen unless there is a shift in male mindsets.
Both remarks were widely condemned by the public and party members alike for being misogynistic and insensitive.
Party Issues Clarification Amid Internal Tensions
The TMC quickly issued a formal statement distancing itself from the comments made by Mitra and Banerjee. The party clarified that the remarks were made in the leaders' personal capacities and did not reflect the official position of the TMC.
Reaffirming its commitment to women's safety, the party emphasized a policy of "zero tolerance" towards crimes against women and demanded the harshest punishment for those involved in the case.
TMC MP Mahua Moitra publicly criticized the remarks of her colleagues, stating that "misogyny cuts across party lines" and stressed the importance of sensitivity and accountability in dealing with such incidents.
The disagreement among party members has played out on social media, with some leaders directly challenging or deviating from the party's stated stance.
Political Fallout and Opposition Response
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has strongly criticized the TMC over the incident, accusing it of attempting "character assassination" of the survivor. The BJP further alleged that the ruling party was trying to protect individuals linked to its student wing who are reportedly involved in the case.
The incident has escalated into a major political flashpoint in West Bengal, with opposition parties organizing protests and demanding action from the highest levels of government.
