Kolkata Trainee Doctor Rape & Murder Case: West Bengal Govt Transfers Hospital Superintendent Over Lapses
The West Bengal government transferred the Superintendent of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital following the rape and murder of a female postgraduate trainee doctor on Friday. This decision came after doctors demanded more action, as reported by ANI.
Junior doctors and medical students staged a protest outside North Bengal Medical College and Hospital (NBMC&H) on Sunday. They were demanding stricter measures in response to the sexual assault and murder at RG Kar Medical College & Hospital in Kolkata.

Kolkata Rape and Murder Case: Protests and Demands
"Prof. Dr Sanjay Vashisth, currently MSVP at RG Kar Medical College, will now serve as a Professor in the Department of Physiology at Calcutta National Medical College," read an order from the Director of Medical Education, Government of West Bengal. "Prof. Dr Bulbul Mukhopadhyay will take over as MSVP at RG Kar Medical College," it added.
On Sunday, junior doctors, post-graduate trainees, and other staff continued their protests, disrupting services in government hospitals across West Bengal. The state health department responded by cancelling offs and holidays for all senior doctors to address personnel shortages when out-patient services resume on Monday.
Nationwide Solidarity and Calls for Action
Medical associations nationwide have shown solidarity with the protesting doctors in Kolkata. The Federation of Resident Doctors' Association of India (FORDA) called for a nationwide halt of elective services in hospitals on Monday. The West Bengal Doctors Forum also wrote to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, urging her to form an impartial enquiry committee to investigate the incident.
The forum demanded capital punishment for the accused and adequate security for workers at various health facilities across the state. Abhishek Banerjee also called for new laws, stating, "Encounter or hanging" as necessary measures after such heinous crimes.
Investigation Progress
The Kolkata Police have arrested Sanjay Roy, a volunteer with the police force, for committing the crime. A case of rape and murder has been registered, and a special investigation team (SIT) has been set up to probe further into the case.
The preliminary autopsy report revealed that the victim was sexually assaulted before being strangulated and smothered to death. Severe bleeding was found from her private parts, eyes, and mouth besides injuries all over her body. The final post-mortem examination report is awaited to conclude the investigation.
This tragic incident has sparked widespread outrage and demands for justice across India. The medical community is united in seeking stringent actions against those responsible while ensuring better safety measures for healthcare workers.
