IIM Student Invited To Boys Hostel, Drugged and Raped In Kolkata; 1 Arrested

A student from the Indian Institute of Management-Calcutta has accused a fellow student of rape inside the hostel campus on Friday. The police have arrested the suspect following an FIR filed by the woman at Haridevpur Police Station.

The woman claimed she was invited to the hostel for a counselling session. During her visit, she consumed a drink that she believes was drugged, causing her to lose consciousness, police said, as per Hindustan Times.

Upon regaining awareness, she realised she had been sexually assaulted. She also alleged that the accused threatened her with severe consequences if she disclosed the incident.

Arrest and Investigation

The accused student was initially detained on Friday night before being formally arrested. An investigation into the matter is currently underway. This case follows another recent incident in Kolkata involving allegations of gangrape at a law college, which has sparked significant public outrage.

In that separate case, a 24-year-old first-year law student reported being gang-raped on June 25 by a former student and two seniors on campus. The victim's lawyer has since submitted crucial details to the Calcutta High Court, demanding further investigation by a central agency.

Details of Previous Incident

Four individuals have been arrested in connection with the law college case, including Monojit Mishra, a former student identified as the prime suspect. Two senior students, Promit Mukherjee and Zaib Ahmed, were also taken into custody along with Pinaki Banerjee, a security guard who provided unclear responses during questioning.

The law student alleged that Mishra assaulted her in the security guard's room between 7:30 p.m. and 10:50 p.m. on June 25. This incident has intensified calls for improved safety measures and accountability within educational institutions.
