Governor CV Ananda Bose Visits Violence-Hit Malda And Murshidabad Despite Mamata's Appeal

Governor of West Bengal CV Ananda Bose left for Malda on Friday, where he is anticipated to meet with those affected by the violence that erupted in Murshidabad during demonstrations against the Waqf (Amendment) Act on April 11. Three people were killed and several were injured in the violence, which also caused extensive property damage. After his visit to Malda, the governor might also proceed to Murshidabad, according to a top Raj Bhavan official.

According to PTI, Bose declared, "I'm heading to the field." The governor would personally assess the situation in Murshidabad and possibly pay a visit to individuals impacted by the incident, the official added. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had urged the governor to postpone his visit to the impacted districts in spite of the visit. Banerjee advised that the governor should delay his visit until trust in the area was restored, arguing that the situation should be given time to normalize. The chief minister also promised support for individuals whose houses and businesses were damaged, as well as ₹10 lakh in compensation for the victims' relatives.

The Supreme Court has ordered that the current state of affairs be upheld until the following hearing. ANI cited Banerjee as stating, "I would urge the Governor to wait a few more days before visiting Murshidabad."

Vijaya Rahatkar, the head of the National Commission for Women (NCW), is scheduled to start a two-day trip to Malda and Murshidabad on Friday. Rahatkar intends to visit the refugee camps established for the victims of the unrest and evaluate the situation on the ground. She also intends to talk to women who have been impacted by the violence.

"The NCW has already taken suo motu cognizance of the violence that erupted in parts of Murshidabad during protests against the Waqf (Amendment) Act on April 11 and 12," Rahatkar stated to PTI. To look into the occurrence, an inquiry committee has been established. She added that in order to address concerns expressed on the treatment of women in relief camps, the commission would travel there.

"We will investigate these complaints as well. We have received reports of inappropriate treatment of women. We will provide a thorough report after analyzing the circumstances," she continued.
