CM Mamata Banerjee Says No To Implement Of Waqf Law In West Bengal

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Saturday once again made it clear that Waqf law will not be implemented in West Bengal. She reached out to violence-hit Murshidabad to appeal for peace and said that when state government's stand is clear, then why Law and order in state is being disturbed?

"We have made our position clear on this matter - we do not support this law. This law will not be implemented in our state. So what is the riot about?," CM Mamata Banerjee said.

"My sincere appeal to all people of all religions, please remain calm, remain restrained. Do not engage in any unrighteous behavior in the name of religion. Every human life is precious. Do not incite riots for the sake of politics. Those who are inciting riots are harming the society," she added.

Violence took place in several areas of Murshidabad district resulting in loss of public property worth crores including vehicles, buildings, including police outposts, railway offices, and shops, vandalised were vandalised and set on fire. Several people, including 15 policemen, were injured in the violence.

The protest against WAQF law amendments took place after Friday prayers.

Speaking to media, West Bengal DGP Rajeev Kumar requested people to prevail peace, do not believe rumour. He also asked police officials to take control over situation.

CM Mamata reiterated that the law was not amended by her party and blamed Centre for everything. However, she made it clear that police and her government will take strict action against people disturbing law and order or damaging any public or private property.

"The law was made by the central government. So the answer you want should be sought from the central government," she further said.
