Kolkata, Nov 14: British Prime Minister David Cameron on Thursday visited Howrah bridge, the iconic landmark of the metropolis, which was once the seat of power of the Raj.

Cameron drove on the 705-metre cantilever bridge, which was opened to the public in February 1943 over the river Hooghly, and halted briefly, taking in the sights of the river.

The bridge, which has featured in numerous films, connects Kolkata with Howrah across the river. The banks of the river in the vicinity of the bridge have been beautified in the recent years.

Cameron is here on a brief trip en route to Colombo from Delhi.

The British Premier also drove through the heritage Dalhousie Square where numerous buildings of the British era, including Writers' Buildings, exist.

The square is now known as BBD Bagh.

He also went to the All India Radio station for giving an interview.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has expressed a desire to transform Kolkata into London and develop Hooghly river on the lines of the Thames.
