Abhishek Banerjee Assault Case: Five Arrested After Mob Attack in Sonarpur, Probe Continues

Five people have been arrested after Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee was attacked by a mob in Sonarpur, South 24 Parganas. Police said the incident took place when Abhishek Banerjee visited the area to meet people affected by post-election violence in West Bengal.

Officers confirmed that the investigation is continuing and more arrests have not been ruled out. Video clips from the spot helped police identify several suspects. Abhishek Banerjee later expressed anger that police personnel were missing from the area when the violence first started.

Among those taken into custody are Tapan Maity and Akash, who were allegedly visible in the visuals linked to the assault. Police stated that all five detained individuals are being questioned about their role in the attack and their presence at the scene in Sonarpur.

The clash has deepened tensions between the Trinamool Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party after the recent change of government in West Bengal. TMC chief and former chief minister Mamata Banerjee directly blamed the BJP, while the ruling party rejected any involvement in the violence.

Speaking about the treatment Abhishek Banerjee received after the assault, Mamata Banerjee accused the authorities of interference. Mamata Banerjee said, "Those who are in power are threatening all the hospitals and the maximum authorities not to admit Abhishek Banerjee because they don't want him to be treated," targeting the new BJP government in Bengal.

A medical note from Belle Vue Clinic stated that Abhishek Banerjee, aged 38, was examined on 30 May 2026. Doctors recorded no serious injury and mentioned a bruise on the chest. The report added that Abhishek Banerjee was conscious, alert, oriented and able to speak normally during the check-up.

Medical staff decided that admission was not required and advised observation instead. Abhishek Banerjee received normal saline, Ringer's lactate and pain-relief drugs as preventive care. The clinic’s findings contrasted with the political rhetoric around the incident, which has become another flashpoint in the ongoing TMC-BJP confrontation across West Bengal.
