Mental Harassment and Attack On Personal Choice! Kerala Bank Manager Bans Beef In Canteen

In Kochi, a Canara Bank branch became the site of an unusual protest. Employees served beef to oppose an alleged ban on the meat in the bank's office and canteen. The protest was organised by the Bank Employees Federation of India (BEFI) and initially aimed at addressing claims of mental harassment by the regional manager.

The regional manager, who recently assumed his role in Kerala, is originally from Bihar. Protesters claimed he ordered a ban on serving beef in the bank's canteens. This prompted BEFI to shift their protest focus to highlight this issue. Outside the office, demonstrators served beef along with parotta, a type of flatbread.

Protest Gains Political Support

Political figures in Kerala expressed their support for the protest. KT Jaleel, an independent MLA backed by leftist groups, praised the demonstration. He stated that "no Sangh Parivar agendas would be allowed in Kerala." His comments were shared on Facebook, emphasising resistance against fascist ideologies.

"What to wear, what to eat, and what to think should not be decided by superiors," Jaleel wrote. He added that wherever communists unite under the red flag, people can speak out without fear of harm. He highlighted that history shows united comrades will not allow any undermining of people's well-being.

Constitutional Rights and Food Choices

SS Anil, a federation leader, explained that a small canteen operates at the bank where beef is occasionally served. The manager reportedly instructed staff to stop serving beef. Anil emphasised that food is a personal choice and every Indian has the right to choose their food without coercion.

The protest was not just about food choices but also about asserting constitutional rights. "This bank functions according to the guidelines of the Constitution," Anil stated. He clarified that they are not forcing anyone to eat beef but are simply expressing their dissent through this form of protest.

Historical Context of Beef Protests

This incident is part of a broader context in Kerala where similar protests have occurred in response to government directives. In 2017, there were demonstrations against central government restrictions on cattle sales for slaughter. These protests reflect ongoing tensions around food choices and cultural practices.
