According to documents filed with Bangladesh's Election Commission, Tarique Rahman's declared annual income stands at a mere Tk 6.76 lakh (approximately ₹5.07 lakh) - a sum that would barely cover the fuel bills for a modest Indian political roadshow. This income, he states, derives entirely from returns on shares, bonds, and fixed deposits.

His bank deposits total Tk 1.23 crore (approx ₹92.25 lakh), but strikingly, Tk 31.6 lakh of this sits in cash or current savings. The remainder is held in fixed deposits, some of which are listed under his daughter Zaima Rahman's name. His movable assets include furniture worth under Tk 2 lakh and gold valued at a paltry Tk 2,950 - less than what many Indian brides receive as shagun.

THE CORRUPTION SHADOW

Tarique's legal history is instructive. In 2023, a Dhaka court sentenced him to nine years and Zubaida to three years in a graft case dating back to 2007. The judgement found Tarique guilty of illegally accumulating over Tk 4.82 crore and concealing assets worth Tk 4.23 crore from his wealth statement. Zubaida was convicted for abetment.

Additionally, a money laundering case involving Tk 20.41 crore siphoned to Singapore had earlier awarded him seven years - though significantly, following Sheikh Hasina's ouster, Bangladesh's Supreme Court acquitted him in this case last month, and all 77 cases against him now stand disposed.
