India–Israel Defence Pact: Focus Shifts To Missile Shields, Laser Weapons And Joint Production

India and Israel are preparing for a major defence agreement that could significantly strengthen their strategic partnership.

With Prime Minister Narendra Modi visiting Tel Aviv, both countries are expected to move beyond simple weapons purchases and focus on technology sharing and joint production of advanced defence systems.

The upcoming pact is likely to focus on modern warfare technologies such as missile defence systems, laser weapons and drones. This step reflects India's growing interest in building stronger defence capabilities with the help of trusted global partners.

Long-Standing Defence Partnership

India and Israel have shared close defence ties since the 1990s. Over the years, Israel has supplied India with important military systems, including drones, radars and precision-guided weapons. These technologies have played a key role in strengthening India's surveillance and defence capabilities.

One of the most important joint projects between the two nations is the Barak-8 missile system, developed together by Israeli and Indian agencies. This system forms an important part of India's air defence network. Israeli drones and loitering munitions have also improved India's ability to monitor borders and respond quickly to threats.

Focus on Missile Defence Systems

A major highlight of the proposed agreement is expected to be cooperation in missile defence. India is reportedly considering several advanced Israeli systems that can help create a strong and layered air defence shield.

Among the systems being discussed are those designed to intercept different types of threats, including short-range rockets, drones and long-range ballistic missiles. These technologies are widely known for their effectiveness in real combat situations and could greatly improve India's ability to defend its cities and critical infrastructure.

India is also exploring the possibility of acquiring or jointly developing a laser-based defence system. Such systems use high-energy laser beams to destroy incoming drones or missiles and are considered more cost-effective than traditional missile interceptors.

Expanding Offensive Capabilities

The cooperation is not limited to defensive systems. Both countries are also expected to expand collaboration in precision strike weapons. Advanced guidance kits, air-to-ground missiles and long-range strike weapons are reportedly part of the discussions.

India is evaluating missile systems that could be integrated with its fighter aircraft fleet, especially the Sukhoi Su-30MKI jets. This would enhance the country's deep-strike capability and allow it to respond more effectively to potential threats.

Building a Multi-Layered Defence Shield

India is working towards building a comprehensive defence shield that can handle different types of modern warfare threats. This includes protection against drones, cruise missiles and ballistic missiles.

The planned system is expected to combine Israeli technologies with India's own indigenous defence systems and other imported platforms. By integrating multiple systems, India aims to create a strong and reliable security network for its borders and major cities.
