Mumbai, July 17: Latest man-made tragedy to hit Mumbai was Tuesday's building collapse in Dongri area in which 14 were killed. A few months ago, it was collapse of a foot overbridge near CST which left six dead. Last month, a wall collapsed in Malad leaving behind casualities, and then of course there is the rainy season which kills people every year.

Irony is that the BMC has a behemoth budget, but yet man made tragedies which clearly point at negligence just refuse to stop. Politicians make strong statements, assure action and vow that responsibility would be fixed after every such accident, but tragedies keep striking the maximum city every now and then.

Maharashtra accounted for the second-highest number of deaths (4,237) due to structural collapses between 2001 and 2015, according to the National Crime Records Bureau's 2016 report. In total, at least 38,363 people lost their lives in as many as 37,514 incidents of collapse of various structures during this period across the country. Every year before the monsoon, Mhada (Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority) and BMC (Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation) release a list of dilapidated and dangerous buildings and issue eviction notices to occupants. But, tragedies just continue unabated.
