Zubeen Garg Calls for Peaceful Continuation of CAA Protests in Assam
In a recent statement from Guwahati on March 26, renowned Assamese singer Zubeen Garg expressed his steadfast opposition to the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), emphasizing that the people of Assam would never endorse the legislation. Garg, a prominent figure and youth icon in the state, has been vocal against the CAA since its inception as a bill in 2017. He highlighted the importance of continuing protests against the Act, advocating for peaceful methods without resulting in any loss of life.

Garg took to Facebook to share his views, urging for a unified effort to challenge the CAA legally and ensure its revocation. He recalled the tragic outcomes of past movements in Assam, including the Assam Agitation and the 2019 anti-CAA demonstrations, which resulted in the loss of young lives. Garg's call for non-violent protest reflects a deep concern for community safety while standing firm against the CAA.
The singer also criticized attempts by the government to enforce the CAA in Assam, asserting that such measures would not be accepted by the state's populace. He stressed that Assam does not entertain any Hindu-Muslim divide and that only residents of Assam and India should have a place in the state. Garg's remarks come amidst a backdrop of widespread opposition to the CAA, which aims to grant Indian citizenship to non-Muslim refugees from Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Afghanistan who entered India on or before December 31, 2014.
During the peak of anti-CAA protests in 2019, Garg was not alone in his opposition. Many notable personalities from various fields joined hands with leaders from different social organizations, using their art forms like songs and poems to voice their dissent. Some of these individuals later aligned with political parties including the BJP and Congress, indicating the widespread political and social ramifications of the CAA debate.
Garg's commitment to opposing the CAA on multiple fronts—be it on stage or through social media—underscores a broader resistance within Assam against what many perceive as an unfair law. By calling for peaceful protests and legal challenges, Garg and like-minded individuals aim to safeguard Assam's social fabric from potential disruptions caused by the CAA.
The singer's appeal for unity in fighting against the CAA legally also highlights a collective faith in India's judiciary system as a means to address grievances. With a petition already filed in the Supreme Court against the Act, there is a hopeful anticipation among opponents of the CAA that justice will prevail.
Zubeen Garg's unwavering stance against the Citizenship Amendment Act serves as a testament to his commitment towards preserving Assam's cultural identity and communal harmony. As debates around CAA continue to unfold, voices like Garg's play a crucial role in shaping public opinion and advocating for peaceful resistance.
