Zubeen Garg Cremation Today: Assam Bids Final Goodbye After Second Autopsy

A large crowd gathered at Guwahati stadium on Monday to bid farewell to Zubeen Garg. His body was displayed in a glass casket, allowing fans to pay their respects. The singer, aged 52, tragically passed away on September 19 while swimming in Singapore without a life jacket. He had been in the city for the North East India Festival, where he was scheduled to perform.

Garg's untimely death is suspected to have been caused by an epileptic seizure, as he had experienced such episodes over the past five years. Fans queued up despite the heat, offering flowers and gamosas, and some even sang his popular songs outside the venue. Medical teams were on standby to assist anyone in need of immediate care.

State Honours and Prominent Tributes

The cremation of Zubeen Garg is set for Tuesday, September 23, at Kamarkuchi in Sonapur near Guwahati at around 10 am. The ceremony will be attended by about 85 family members and close associates and will be conducted with full state honours. Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya and singer Papon were among those who paid tribute at the stadium.

In response to public demand, a second autopsy will be performed on Garg's body on Tuesday to rule out any foul play. This decision was announced by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. Singapore authorities had already conducted an autopsy before releasing the body to Garg's associates.

Closure of Institutions and Procession Details

All educational institutions in Assam are closed today due to Garg's last rites. Government offices in Kamrup (Metropolitan) district are also shut down. The procession to the cremation ground will begin at 7:30 am from Arjun Bhogeswar Baruah Sports Complex, with Assam police personnel serving as pallbearers.

The journey will include a gun salute as a mark of respect for the late singer. On Sunday, fans blocked the national highway for hours demanding that his remains be brought back to the city where he spent his formative years.

Final Farewell and Ashes Immersion

Zubeen Garg's ashes will be immersed in Jorhat city, respecting local sentiments. His family members were present at the stadium along with his four canine companions who also bid him farewell. The death certificate issued by Singapore authorities lists "drowning" as the cause of death.

The Chief Minister confirmed that this information was provided by the Singapore High Commission. As emotions ran high among mourning fans who travelled from various parts of Assam, it became evident how deeply Zubeen Garg had touched their lives through his music.
